Essential Medical Equipment Payment

The Essential Medical Equipment Payment is an annual $140 payment to people who experience additional increases in home energy costs from the use of essential medical equipment to manage their disability or medical condition. This payment must be claimed, and payments will be available from 1 July 2012.

People with disability still face barriers to employment
The third annual report on the National Disability Agreement released recently by the COAG Reform Council shows that Australia has a long way to go before it breaks down barriers for people with disability.
 
The report shows that in 2009, Australians with disability had employment to population rates of 50 per cent compared to around 79 per cent for people without disability. The labour force participation rate was also significantly lower at 54 per cent compared to 83 per cent.
